Dec. 3rd
Leaving the beautiful island of South Padre,we headed north through the Rio Grande Valley.
We passed large ranches, oil pumpers, vegetable and fruit stands with Mexican pottery. "Winter Texans" stay in this area.
After settling in at our KOA Alamo/San Antonio we took a taxi (5miles) to downtown San Antoni0. It is the 2nd largest city in Texas next to Houston-- lots of highrises, history, construction, overpasses and traffic. We stopped in at Coyote Ugly's Saloon for drinks and eats. The entertainment was outrageous---girls dancing on the bar etc. Judy I needed a dance partner to get up on the bar with me!!! (check the pictures for Marie's big black dance partner)
Warm day high 70's.
Dec. 4th
We drove straight through San Antonio (quick lane changes and heavy traffic) on our way through the Hill Country to Fredericksburg about 1.5 hours. It was a very pretty German town of 6500. It was all decorated for Christmas. The restaurants and gift shops were mostly made of stone, brick and granite;nicely designed. We had local German beer and food for lunch.
I watched Survivor,CSI, and ER for the first time in a month. Cooler 60 Deg. F today.
Dec. 5ht
Cold last night around freezing. Cool mid 50's during the day. We had breakfast at the KOA Chuckwagon.
We took the city transit to downtown San Antonio. We toured the Alamo where Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie defended Texas against Santa Ana and Mexican rule.
The world famous San Antonio River Walk is amazing. The walkway is designed along a series of canals under the downtown city core on the San Antonio River. The canals are to prevent downtown flooding. It is city within a city with a life of its own.
In the afternoon we took the 35 minute River Cruise past two miles of sidewalk cafes, waterfalls, bridges, hotels and statues. For dinner we had a tasty Texan steak at Saltgrass Restaurant on the River Walk.
After dark we did the cruise again. Carolers, strolling musicians, millions of Christmas lights and 6000 luminarias(candles)decorating the walk---it was unbelievably beautiful!
